Summary of Fall Weddings in Zion

Here's the round up of quick highlights you can expect from Zion in the fall!

Season

Beginning in September until the end of November

Pros

  • Ideal Temperatures: October and November especially see mild temperatures with warm days and cool evenings.

  • Lower Visitation: Visitation tapers off from the summer peak after Labor Day. The Park is still busy, but it's progressively less so as the season moves along.

  • Accessible Locations: After monsoon season in early September, we rarely have issues with trails or roads being closed due to weather.

  • Beautiful Scenery: We often see fall colors in the upper elevations in late September - October and in the main canyon in late October - early November.

Cons

  • Wide temperature variability: The temperatures vary widely between sunrise to midday and then sunset, which can be tricky for choosing clothing

  • Off-season Hours: After Labor Day, some local businesses shift to off-season hours which can limit availability of some experiences or complicate timelines.

  • High Wedding Demand: Fall is one of the busiest wedding seasons in Southern Utah, so you may experience more competition for dates or not be able to get vendors due to availability.

Weather

  • High Temperatures: 50℉ - 95℉ (10℃ - 35℃)

  • Low Temperatures: 30℉ - 65℉ (-1℃ - 18℃)

  • Precipitation Likelihood: 13% in September, 11% in October, 9% in November

What's Zion Like in the Fall?

Fall conditions in Zion swing strongly between the beginning of September, that often feels more like summer, and the end of November, when things starts to feel a little more like winter. The fall vibes most people love don't typically show up here until October. Prior to the first snowfall at higher elevations (sometimes in late November), we can reliably access the whole region.

Precipitation

Fall starts with the tail end of monsoon season in early September, we still commonly see afternoon thunderstorms during this time. October and November remain relatively dry with a slightly elevated chance of precipitation than the early summer months.

Road Conditions

Road closures due to weather in the fall typically revolve around monsoon season and typically only last as long as the storm itself remains active. At the higher elevations in the region we have elevated chances of snowfall impacting road conditions as we get into late November.

Zion Canyon Scenic Drive

The shuttle service for the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive remains in daily service until early November. During that time, you can only access that area by shuttle unless you have a parking pass for the Zion Lodge. Once daily shuttle service ends, you can drive the Scenic Drive with personal vehicles. The Scenic Drive has limited parking, so the Park closes the Drive when no parking spots remain. You can expect consistent closures during peak hours (10am - 2pm) throughout most of November. Visit the Park's website for more details on the shuttle service schedule.

Trail Conditions

Fall is an excellent time for hiking in Zion. Low lying trails, slot canyons, and river hikes like the Narrows will close during elevated flash flood risks, which happens fairly regularly during monsoon season. Prior to the first snowfall of the year (sometimes as early as late-November), most higher elevation and backcountry trails will remain open all season.

Visitation

Visitation reduces slightly from the peak of summer, but stays pretty busy through September and October. As we get into November, we see visitation drop considerably. Fall accounts for 28% of Zion's yearly visitation on average.

  • September: 11%

  • October: 11%

  • November: 6%

6% represents 280,000 people in the month of November, so don't expect a ghost town. Many of the popular spots will still have quite a few people around, just fewer than you'd see during peak season.

Activities and Amenities

The higher visitation in September and October means many businesses operate in the peak season capacity, though some local businesses begin transitioning to their off-season hours during this time period. Once we get into November, most businesses will be operating with fewer staff and reduced hours.

Fall Weddings in Zion

Between the ideal weather and the high availability of activities and amenities, fall is one of the busiest seasons for weddings in Southern Utah. Not to mention, fall is trendy! Nationwide, fall has been the dominant wedding season since 2020. Here are a few things to consider when planning a fall wedding around Zion:

Book Early

The popularity of the season means many wedding vendors book up fall dates early, especially weekends. In our experience, the Southern Utah booking season is shorter than other regions, so you are pretty safe booking around a year in advance.

Aim for a weekday

Fall is the season of the weekend warrior. We see strong increases in traffic and visitation throughout the weekends and the weekdays tend to be less busy. If you have the flexibility, take advantage of that and plan your wedding for a weekday.

Bring Layers

The wide temperature fluctuations we see in the mid to late fall can be hard to plan outfits for. Expect to be warm during the day, especially when you're in the sun, and cool when in the mornings and evenings, especially when in the shade. We recommend bringing a coat you can easily wear over your wedding clothes to help you warm up while in between photos and while walking around. You could also consider planning a warm layer that matches your outfit and that you don't mind being photographed in! Shawls, capes, overcoats, etc. can all really pull a fall wedding outfit together!

Treat Early Fall like Summer

Early September will feel more like summer to most people. We commonly see midday temperatures in the 90s. So make sure you plan to hydrate and wear sunscreen. We recommend wearing moisture wicking fabrics when possible and maybe plan to have outfit options that provide shade like a hat or umbrella.

Work with a Local

Working with local professionals who know and work around Zion can help alleviate a lot of stress from your wedding day planning and execution. Outdoor weddings always come with a little risk, no matter the season. If you work with an experienced local, they can help you make backup plans and pivot during the day as needed!
